German firm plans to open distribution center in Hagerstown

December 15, 2006|by TARA REILLY

A German supplier of aluminum modular machine building and framing products plans to open a distribution center in Hagerstown.

Item International has signed a lease with Merritt Properties LLC for 60,600 square feet at 12105 Insurance Way in the Hunt Ridge Business Park, according to the Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission.

The North American distribution center will be called Item International America, EDC Deputy Director Cassandra Latimer said Thursday.

The company's products will be stored, packaged and shipped from the Hagerstown distribution center, according to the EDC.

Item International America Vice President Matthias Urwalek said in a written statement that the county was a catch because of its proximity to Interstates 70 and 81.

It will allow the company to "easily move our products efficiently to distributors in the Midwest region as well as along the entire East Coast," Urwalek said.

"Washington County is the perfect location for our company's expansion efforts," he said.

Item International already is in the leased space and will be fully functional in early 2007, according to the EDC. It plans to create seven new jobs over the next two years.
