Teen Idol contest



Washington County Free Library and The Maryland Theatre are sponsoring a Teen Idol contest for ages 16 to 19. Entrants must be 16 by Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007.

The contest is open to single artists only. Audition tapes must be limited to two songs and contain no profanity, explicit lyrics or nudity. DVDs and videos will be accepted. Audition tapes must be submitted to Washington County Free Library system by Feb. 28. Tapes will not be returned.

Live competitions will be held at The Maryland Theatre. Semifinals will be held Saturdays, April 14 and 28, 2007. The final competition will be Saturday, May 5, 2007.

The winner will receive a free trip to New York to audition for "American Idol."

Porte Crayon's Mexico



SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - John E. Stealey III, professor of history at Shepherd University, has published his third book, "Porte Crayon's Mexico: David Hunter Strother's Diaries in the Early Porfirian Era, 1879-1885." In his book, Stealey introduces, explains and edits the Mexican volumes of the David Hunter Strother diaries, creating the first primary-source material on the subject.

In his diaries, Strother, also known by his pen name Porte Crayon, writes of his observations of Mexican society, life and politics as he worked as U.S. consul general in Mexico City.

"Porte Crayon's Mexico" is filled with anecdotes and characterizations of key figures of the time and has observations concerning Mexico's modernization process.

Stealey is the author of numerous articles and essays about the Virginias, southern Appalachia and 19th-century America.

Hillstreet Skate Park



FREDERICK, Md. - The City of Frederick is pleased to announce that the light fixtures at the Hillstreet Skate Park are now operational and evening skate sessions will be offered throughout December. Park hours for December are Tuesdays through Thursdays from 3 to 8 p.m.; Fridays from 3 to 9 p.m.; Saturdays from noon to 9 p.m.; and Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. The skate park will be closed on Mondays.

Hillstreet Skate Park will be scheduling special hours of operation for the winter school holiday. For more detailed information, call 240-409-3807.
