Mail Call

December 13, 2006

"Several days ago a person stated that a $30,000-per-year job wasn't much money. Obviously, he was not from Washington County. I am college educated and hold a master's in my specified field. I make barely $15,000 per year. Of that $15,000, about $2,000 per year goes for gas and another $1,500 for insurance. Food and clothing cost about $3,000 per year. I have a wife and a school-age child, and that cost about $10,000 per year. We cannot afford rent so we live in a 1970ish camper trailer on a friend's property. We heat with wood and haul water. I have to hide my family because Washington County inspectors (those $30,000-per-year people) say it is illegal to live in a camper trailer. We are poor but we are honest. Those $30,000 Yankees that moved into this area have hurt the little person. Who ever thought it would be illegal to live in a camper on private property? Please take your $30,000-per-year jobs and these crazy Washington County laws back where they come from. They are not welcome here. I do not want your $30,000 job. I just want to be left alone!"

"The Citizens to Protect Rights group spent $8,000 to support Baker, Barr, and Wivell. Is more sprawl really best for Washington County?"

"This is to the individual in court yesterday, attempting to fight a $10 parking ticket. I have a piece of advice for you. Next time, pay the $10 fine. What an incredible waste of taxpayers' dollars, court time and paperwork, just to avoid a $10 ticket. You must have a lot of time on your hands to fight something so petty."

"I'm calling about the council meeting where they interviewed the candidates on TV. It was a complete sham. They had their mind made up before the candidates even got up to speak. I don't know why they even bothered wasting the other candidates' time to talk about things."

"I'm calling in regards to the people calling in about the gas prices going up since the Democrats have been voted in. If they had any intelligence at all, they would realize that there's still a Republican trying to ruin this country. His name's Bush, and gas prices went up when the Republicans got in because Bush started a war with a country that controlled the oil. "

"Be honest - if you don't believe in the real meaning of Christmas, then don't take the holiday time off and the pay or bonus you would receive from your employer. The government has over three million who get up to a week off with pay, and if they do work, they receive triple time. Don't believe? Don't take the money or time off."

"I'm calling in response to all the Mail Calls about the discussions that the city council had regarding the refugees that are coming here from the Virginia Council of Churches. This is all sounding again like a Willie Mays thing, which is gonna put another black eye on Hagerstown. I take exception to what some of the council members are saying, and also what the people in the newspaper are saying. From what I understand, these refugees are coming in for political reasons. They're seeking a place to come and live in peace. They're persecuted where they are; if they go back they'll be persecuted again. Why can't we open up our arms and welcome them, and not persecute them again?"

"To the caller who made the statement that he would not even leave his house for $30,000 a year: The egomaniac better wake up and realize that not everybody is capable of making big dollars in this area, or many areas, and he ought to be thankful for those people who go out and serve him food, and ring up his groceries, and give him the service that he needs. He must think he's a king. I'm fortunate - I do make more than $30,000 a year, but would never make the statement that I wouldn't work for less, because who knows what I may have to work for some day. It is about surviving and feeding yourself and your family, so get your ego in check."

"To the people that want to know why inmates are allowed to go to funerals or viewings: You'd have to ask the judge that. They're allowed to go when it's court ordered."

- Hagerstown

"There's a non-Christian who wrote in here about Happy Holidays and so forth. This person also says 'There are many of us non-Christians (who) have a deep and abiding relationship with God'. Christian means believers and people who have accepted Jesus Christ. You cannot be a non-Christian and have an abiding relationship with God. Someone needs to give you some information out of the Bible so that you do understand what you need to do. Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and then you will have an abiding relationship with God. I hope you can understand this and come to the point where you are really a Christian. Thank you."
