Hovermale is Indians' trump card

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Ashley Hovermale hit three 3-point baskets in the second half against Lincoln County's diamond-and-1 defense to help Berkeley Springs pull away for a 57-45 victory over Lincoln County at the Hoops Classic basketball showcase Tuesday morning.

The Indians (2-1) led 29-21 at the half behind Rebecca Trump's 13 first-half points. Lincoln County shadowed Trump with the defense, opening the door for Hovermale and the rest of the Indians to pick up the slack.

Berkeley Springs fell behind early in the third quarter before Hovermale's flurry. Trump hit three foul shots late in the game to seal the victory.


Trump finished with 16 points while Hovermale, who was named team MVP for the game, finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Sarah Risinger had nine points and six rebounds.

Brunswick 77, Clear Spring 49

CLEAR SPRING - Danielle Maught had 22 points to lead Brunswick over Clear Spring in an MVAL Antietam game.

Carley Snyder led Clear Spring with 12 points, while Leslie Morgan had 11 points and Andrea Baum had nine points for the Blazers (0-2, 0-1).

SYKESVILLE, Md. - Cara Jordan had six points, Emily Hargreaves had five points and Colleen Black had five rebounds to lead Smithsburg as the Leopards (1-2) fell to Century (3-0).

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Steph Addleman had a team-high 11 points and seven rebounds, but Chambersburg suffered its first loss of the season to Central Dauphin East (4-1, 2-1) in a Mid-Penn Commonwealth game.

Allee Rife had 10 points and seven rebounds and Logan Lentz had nine points, five assists and five steals for the Trojans (3-1, 2-1).

Heritage 45, Broadfording 44

Morgan McIntire had 15 points and five assists and Brit Eberly had 13 points to lead Heritage to a one-point victory over MDCC opponent Broadfording.

Jen Holtzman had 10 rebounds and Brianna Dorsey added five steals for the Eagles (5-1, 5-0).

Taylor Capshaw had a game-high 17 points and Emma Stahl had 12 points for the Lions (1-5, 1-3).

FISHERTOWN, Pa. - Natasha Bard had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Southern Fulton over Chestnut Ridge in a Mid-Penn Commonwealth game.

Destane Whiteside had 12 points and Jesse Whiteside had four assists and four steals for the Indians (3-0, 3-0).

Shalom 30, New Life 27

FREDERICK, Md. - Christina Hussack led Shalom Christian with eight points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and three steals, as the Flames topped New Life Christian in an MDCC game.

Alyssa Rohrer had eight points and three steals and Alexis Marquiss had five points and six rebounds to lead the Flames (2-3, 1-1).

Poolesville 48, Hedgesville 39

POOLESVILLE, Md. - Ashton Butler scored a team-high 16 points for Hedgesville as the Eagles shot 17-for-38 from the floor in a season-opening loss to Poolesville.

Ciera Nicholson grabbed 14 rebounds for Hedgesville (0-1).

Rachel Stream led all scorers with 19 points for the Indians (3-1), who shot 19-for-32 from the floor.


Goretti 52, Tuscarora 35

FREDERICK, Md. - Kevin Breslin had a game-high 14 points and six rebounds and the St. Maria Goretti defense held Tuscarora (1-2) to 13 of 41 shooting in a non-league victory.

Benny Alencherry had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists and Mitch Belella had 11 points for the Gaels (3-2).

St. James 46, St. Andrews 26

POTOMAC, Md. - Mike Russ had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead St. James, who led St. Andrews 28-4 at halftime en route to a Mid Atlantic Conference win.

T.K. Washington had nine points and 10 rebounds while Ben Farquhar added 10 boards for the Saints (3-2, 1-2).

FREDERICK, Md. - Tyrone Wheeler had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Diez Johnson added 11 points and three steals for North (1-2). Marcellus Sumlin had six rebounds and Rashaud Morton recorded three steals in the loss.

Matt Foley led all scorers with 28 points for Thomas Johnson (2-0). Tyler Snoots added 24 points and 15 rebounds.

THURMONT, Md. - Steven Beaver had a team-high 13 points for Hancock (0-3) in a loss to Catoctin (1-2).

UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Will Taylor had 14 points and nine rebounds for Williamsport as the Wildcats (1-1) committed 27 turnovers and gave away a six-point lead after three quarters in a loss to Francis Scott Key (1-1).

FREDERICK, Md. - Chris Thompson scored 24 points and Steve Custis added 22 for Frederick as the Cadets (2-1) forced 12 turnovers in the third quarter in a win over South Hagerstown.

Shane Santell scored 11 points and Muzammil Bhutto added eight for the Rebels (0-3).

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Kendall Naylor had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Grant Wilson added 12 points and seven boards for Brunswick as the Railroaders defeated Clear Spring in an MVAL Antietam game.

Seth Haines had seven rebounds and five blocks, Grayson Barnette added seven boards and Andrew Simpson and Justin Stone had three steals each for Brunswick (1-2, 1-0), which led 36-12 at halftime and finished the Blazers (0-1) with a 28-7 fourth quarter.

COLONIAL PARK, Pa. - Armond Perez had 14 points and eight rebounds as Chambersburg edged Central Dauphin East (3-2, 2-1) in a Mid-Penn Commonwealth matchup.

Nate Strickler had 11 points and three steals for the Trojans (4-0, 3-0).

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Jordan Reed scored 18 points and Denver Effland added 13 for Hedgesville as the Eagles (1-0) opened their season with a victory over Poolesville.
