December 12, 2006

SCRANTON, Pa. - A former band director at Clear Spring High School and two other Washington County schools led his Pennsylvania band to a recent win in the Tournament of Bands Atlantic Coast Group IV regional and state championships.

John E. Eckstine Jr. has been teaching in the Spring-Ford area school district in the Philadelphia area for nearly seven years.

In his 20 years in Washington County, he was at Clear Spring from 1981-1991.

Eckstine's Golden Ram Marching Band placed first with a score of 97.3 to win the group's only first-place championship title. The band also took first place in brass, woodwinds, and music, and second place in percussion.

The band competed against 38 bands in a nine-state region to qualify to participate in the championship, which pitted the group against 19 other bands including Boonsboro and Williamsport, Eckstine said.
