SAN DIEGO - Neely Spence of Shippensburg, Pa., placed eighth out of 40 girls at the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships at Balboa Park.

Spence, a home-schooled junior, covered the 3.1-mile course in 18:13.

Kathy Kroeger of Tennessee won the race in 17:29.

The top 10 girls from each of the country's four regions competed in the race.

Spence, the PIAA Class AAA state champ, won the Northeast region title two weeks ago.


Jefferson 81, St. James 36

ST. JAMES - Keyara Stevenson had 13 points while Amanda Gardner added 12 for Jefferson as the Cougars (2-1) defeated St. James.

Heather Lowery scored a game-high 18 points for the Saints (0-5).

Harford Christian 37, Grace Academy 36

FREDERICK, Md. - Megan Everett had 10 points and nine rebounds for Grace Academy as the Knights lost an eight-point halftime lead in a close loss in the New Life Tournament.


Rebecca Morgan had 11 points and five steals and Kristin Serafini added 11 rebounds for Grace (3-1).

St. Timothy's 50, Mercersburg 48

STEVENSON, Md. - Jenn Dillon had 12 points and six assists while Lauren Dobish added 12 points and five assists for Mercersburg Academy (1-2).

Hampshire 78, Berkeley Springs 43

ROMNEY, W.Va. - Alex Tamez led Berkeley Springs with 14 points as the Indians (1-1, 0-1) lost in their Potomac Valley Conference opener.


Max Horz Invitational

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Musselman took part in the Max Horz Invitational at Berkeley Springs, finishing sixth out of 13 teams with 137 points.

Dustin Haislip was named most outstanding wrestler of the tournament after placing first at 135. Billy Barrett, at 130 pounds, also won his weight division. Jared Weatherholtz (189) placed second, Luke Dawson (152) finished fourth and Josh Anderson (140) was sixth in his respective weight class for Musselman.

Mercersburg Classic Duals

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Mercersburg Academy went 3-1 Saturday as the host of the eight-team Mercersburg Duals event. The Blue Storm defeated St. Albans (54-27), Georgetown Prep (44-29) and Eaton (Oh.) (39-34) and fell 35-30 to Sidwell Friends. Tyler Mort, Bobby Wolford, Dan Mazzei and Adam Barnette were all unbeaten on the day for Mercersburg.

St. James went 1-3 at the event, beating St. Albans (51-28) but suffering losses to Georgetown Prep (43-30), Lawrenceville (40-37) and Kiski (44-31).
