Man dies when car collides with train

December 09, 2006

MARION, Pa. - A Franklin County, Pa., man was killed and a woman seriously injured Friday night when a passenger car was struck by a train at a railroad crossing on Swamp Fox Road near Marion.

The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:16 p.m. accident, Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said Friday night. Conner did not release the man's name Friday night, saying family members still had to be notified.

An autopsy will be performed today at Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Allentown, Pa.

An officer with the Marion Volunteer Fire Co. said a woman in the car was flown from the scene to York (Pa.) Hospital by a state medevac helicopter from Hagerstown. The officer said he did not know the name of the woman.

There were no other occupants in the car, and no one else was injured, the officer said.

Conner said the car was westbound when it collided with the southbound freight train. Conner and the fire company officer both said the railroad crossing situated between U.S. 11 and Exit 10 of Interstate 81 has warning lights, but no crossing gates.

The crossing is on a straight and level stretch of Swamp Fox Road.

Pennsylvania State Police said troopers still were on the scene investigating the crash as of 10 p.m. The fire company officer said fire police also were at the scene directing traffic.

An advanced life support vehicle from Chambersburg and an engine from the New Franklin Volunteer Fire Co. assisted at the crash site, the fire company officer said.
