Toys for Tots dropoff site

Long & Foster's Hagerstown office will be a sponsor of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves' annual Toys for Tots campaign through Thursday, Dec. 14. Donated toys should be new and unwrapped. Toys may be dropped off seven days a week at Long & Foster's Hagerstown office at 1100 Dual Highway.

Once the toys are collected and presented to the Marines, they are distributed through churches and social welfare agencies to the neediest children throughout the community.

The public is invited to an open house at the Hagerstown office from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14. For information on this year's Toys for Tots campaign, call 301-797-2300.


Gift wrapping benefits Red Cross

The public is invited to help REACH wrap holiday gifts for the American Red Cross from 6 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at the station near Old Navy at Valley Mall, Hagerstown. To sign up to wrap, call 301-733-2371, ext. 101 or e-mail

Wrapping stations will be in front of Bon Ton and Old Navy through Saturday, Dec. 24. Proceeds benefit the American Red Cross.

Annual pottery sale begins today

MONT ALTO, Pa. - The Nicodemus Center for Ceramic Studies at Penn State Mont Alto and the Mont Alto Pottery Cooperative will hold its third annual pottery sale from noon to 4 p.m. today through Friday, Dec. 15, in the center's pottery studio, General Studies building on the Mont Alto campus.

The sale will include wheel-thrown, slab and hand-built earthenwares and stonewares, including bowls, basins, mugs, pitchers, flowerpots, vases, plates, jars, platters and tiles - all created by co-op members.

Health tests planned for Dec. 11

Prevention Health Group will offer five quick, painless, noninvasive health tests beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown.

A carotid artery screening will show your risk of stroke. Also included will be a test to look for abdominal aneurysms, a screening that checks for hardening of the arteries in the legs, an osteoporosis bone density and a pulmonary lung function test.

The tests are read by a board-certified physician and cost $26 each when you get all five done. The results are given directly to you and you are referred back to your own doctor. Call 800-446-0925 for information. Space is limited.

Open house at animal shelter

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -The Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Road, will hold its annual Christmas open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10. This open house also will be a celebration of the shelter's 30 years of service to the community.

Shelter staff and volunteers will welcome guests, provide tours of the shelter and answer any questions visitors might have. Refreshments will be served and guests are invited to bring their feline and canine companions to the open house for photos with Santa. Pet sitters will be available and all proceeds from the Santa photos will benefit the AHS spay/neuter program.

Donations to the shelter will be accepted throughout the day.
