Christmas celebrated with caroling concerts

December 07, 2006|by JULIE E. GREENE

Go shopping or turn on the radio and you're bound to hear holiday tunes from the likes of Andy Williams, Bing Crosby and Elvis.

You can hear some of these same tunes sung by friends, neighbors and other local residents in concerts by St. Patrick's Chorale and Hagerstown Choral Arts.

Both choruses will perform this weekend.

Hagerstown Choral Arts, with about 80 members from the Tri-State area, will hold its Christmas concert Saturday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church. St. Patrick's Chorale, with about 34 members from the Tri-State area, will sing Sunday afternoon at Christ's Reformed Church UCC, both in Hagerstown.

A collaboration of choirs

"Christmas with Choral Arts" will feature The Treblemakers, a children's chorus from Paramount Elementary School directed by Linda Barnhart and Hagerstown Handbell Ensemble directed by John Rudy, says Gregory Shook, music and artistic director for Hagerstown Choral Arts.

The performance will include everyone in the choruses performing "O Holy Night," "Go Tell It on the Mountain," and one of Shook's favorite carols, "In the Bleak Midwinter."

Many people are probably more familiar with "In the Bleak Midwinter" as a hymn than a Christmas carol. The song tells of the birth of Jesus and talks about giving our hearts to Christmas, the season and what it represents, Shook says.

Secular and sacred

The first half of St. Patrick's Chorale's concert features secular pieces, including a medley from the 1954 movie "White Christmas," which starred Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney.

A cantata, "The Wonder of Christmas," will be performed in the second half. The collection of sacred songs will tell the story of the birth of Christ, the origin of Christmas.

The audience will be invited to sing along during portions of the concert, says Sandra Shirey, director of the chorale.
