BOE approves documents for Maugansville's new school

December 06, 2006|by ERIN CUNNINGHAM

The Washington County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to approve construction documents for Maugansville Elementary School.

A replacement for the existing elementary school is expected to open in 2008, said Boyd Michael, assistant superintendent for school operations. About $24.5 million had been budgeted for the project, according to documents.

Board Vice President Wayne D. Ridenour said about 1,000 square feet had to be cut from the facility because of rising construction costs.

"(Officials) did a good job of making that reduction without hopefully impacting the operations of the school," he said.

The construction documents were approved 6-0, with newly elected Board Member William H. Staley abstaining because he said he had not seen the construction documents yet.
