Veterans Park OK'd for summer camp

SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Town Council approved Veterans Park as the site for a Washington County Parks and Recreation summer camp at its Tuesday night meeting.

The camp will be held for seven weeks during the summer of 2007 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The park will not be closed to the public during these hours.

Police respond to 221 service calls

SMITHSBURG - Police Chief Michael S. Potter reported that his department responded to 221 calls for service in November during Tuesday night's Smithsburg Town Council meeting.

The Smithsburg Police Department assisted the Washington County Sheriff's Department 15 times, Maryland State Police three times and the Ontario Provincial Police once. The department also made 12 arrests, Potter said.


Councilman Jerome Martin and Councilwoman Shirley Aurand raised concerns about juveniles loitering, and possibly littering, on Water Street in Smithsburg. Potter said that loitering is not illegal, but the juveniles might be in violation of the town's curfew, he said.

Christmas festivities slated for Dec. 16

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg's community Christmas party is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 16.

Children can attend Breakfast with Santa from 7 to 10 a.m. at the fire hall. From 3 to 5 p.m., local groups will be decorating trees in the square. The children's party is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the fire hall.
