A Falling Waters, W.Va., man died Friday when the pickup truck he was driving hit a tractor-trailer parked on a shoulder along Interstate 68 and then struck a pedestrian, Maryland State Police in Hagerstown said.

Matthew P. Butts, 23, of 51 Mobil Court was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Butts was driving a 2004 Ford F-250 pickup truck east on I-68 near Creek Road, when the truck went onto the right shoulder for an unknown reason and hit the rear of a parked tractor-trailer, police said.

The tractor-trailer was parked behind another tractor-trailer that had broken down.

After hitting the tractor-trailer, the pickup truck hit Bernard Leroy Bittinger, 49, of Frostburg, Md., who was standing on the shoulder, police said.

The pickup truck then went off the shoulder, into the grass and rolled several times. Butts was then thrown from the pickup, police said.

Police said Butts was not wearing a seat belt.

Bittinger received minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital from the scene.

The accident was the second fatal wreck in three days in Washington County.

On Wednesday, Patrick Alan Ruggles, 22, of Boonsboro, and Samantha Ann Stallings, 18, died as a result of an accident near Boonsboro, Maryland State Police said.
