Crash kills Berkeley County man

December 01, 2006|by MATTHEW UMSTEAD

A Berkeley County man died Thursday morning when the car he was driving collided with a Holsum bread truck east of Martinsburg at the intersection of Eagle School Road and W.Va. 45, police and officials said.

John Holcomb, 42, was pronounced dead at 6:17 a.m. at the scene of the crash by Berkeley County Coroner David Brining.

Randy Chilcote, the driver of the bread truck, was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., to be examined as a precaution, but he did not sustain any life-threatening injuries, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call about the accident at 5:56 a.m.

Investigating Sheriff's Department Deputy Steve Crites said in a news release that fog contributed to the accident.

Crites said Holcomb was traveling south in a 2005 Honda Civic on Eagle School Road and that he collided with the truck Chilcote was driving west on W.Va. 45 toward Martinsburg.
