Vets dinner to honor Pearl Harbor survivors

The Speener M. Hose Veterans Dinner - a salute to all veterans - will be Friday, Dec. 8, at the Elks Lodge 378 on Robinwood Drive.

Retired Maj. Gen. Greg Corliss, United States Marine Corps, will be guest speaker for the event sponsored by the Joint Veterans Council of Washington County.

Pearl Harbor survivors will be specially honored on the 65th anniversary of the attack.

Cocktails are at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m.

The cost is $20 per person and may be paid by check to Joint Veterans Council and sent to Harold H. King, 11839 Bradford Drive, Hagerstown, Md., 21742.

Local author to have two book signings

Hagerstown author Justin Mayhue will sign copies of his new book, "A Civil War Journey: The Letters of John W. Brendel" Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2:30 p.m. at Borders, 17636 Garland Groh Blvd.


The book tells the story of a Union soldier's journey through the Civil War, including his experiences in battles at South Mountain and Antietam. The book includes all 144 letters that John Brendel wrote to his family.

Mayhue will be signing copies of a two-volume set, "Firefighting in Hagerstown" and "Hagerstown Firefighting, Through the Years," at Waldenbooks at Valley Mall earlier that day, from noon to 2 p.m.
