Hometown Christmas

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The ceremonial lighting of the tree will be preceded by a holiday costumed pet parade, children's choirs and community choruses, and the arrival of Santa Claus. There will be caroling along Queen Street. Santa will greet children in the lobby of Shenandoah Hotel. Festivities continue until the tree is lit. 6 p.m. today. Star party

CLEAR SPRING - TriState Astronomers will host a free public star party. The astronomers will set up telescopes and allow the public to observe objects of the winter night sky. Neptune and Comet Swan will be visible in the southwest until about 9:30 p.m. Uranus will be visible in the southwest until about 11:30 p.m. Scopes available from 6:30 to 11 p.m. today and Saturday. Lighting of the tree

Memorial Illumination

SHARPSBURG - The placement of 23,110 luminarias by more than 1,400 volunteers over a six-mile portion of the battlefield. Each luminaria represents a soldier who was killed or wounded at the Battle of Antietam on Sept. 17, 1862. 6 p.m. Saturday. Antietam National Battlefield. Christmas in Shepherdstown

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The annual Christmas in Shepherdstown celebration continues with a book signing from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Devonshire Shop; holiday marketplace from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at War Memorial Building; Christmas parade at 11 a.m. Saturday on German Street; Ford Model A rides through town from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday; organ performance from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., historic Shepherdstown.
