BOONSBORO - A head-on collision killed two people and sent a Sharpsburg man to the hospital early Wednesday afternoon, according to Maryland State Police.

Patrick Alan Ruggles, 22, of Boonsboro, was killed on impact when the 1990 Subaru Legacy he was driving struck a 1994 Mazda Protege on Alternate U.S. 40 west of Cool Hollow Road, police said.

Ruggles' eastbound vehicle traveled left of center when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road, police said.

Samantha Ann Stallings, 18, a passenger in the Mazda, died at Washington County Hospital after the 12:27 p.m. accident, police said.

Ronald Dennis Kicklighter Jr., 22, of Sharpsburg, who was driving the Mazda, was flown to Washington County Hospital in serious condition, police said. A spokeswoman at the hospital said Wednesday night that Kicklighter no longer was a patient there.

A Shock Trauma Center coordinator said Wednesday night that a Ronald Kicklighter was in fair condition at the Baltimore hospital.
