Holiday events this weekend

No more excuses for being a Scrooge.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are behind us and the Christmas season is picking up steam with holiday events this weekend.

Several of the celebrations are just being held this weekend in the Tri-State area while other activities and entertainment, such as theater productions, will continue.

Events include:

Washington County

Downtown Holiday Open House, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; Hagerstown. Businesses offer specials. Refreshments. Music entertainment: KoKo Blue, 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday; traveling troubadour Pete Lancaster, 5 to 7 p.m. Friday; and Girls Inc. choir, 10 a.m. Saturday. Lunch with Santa begins with hayrides at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Saturday and includes a visit and photo with Santa; reservations required, call 301-739-8577, ext. 183. Lunch costs $10, adults; $6, children.

Festival of Trees at Robinwood Medical Center with decorated trees, holiday gift shop, live entertainment and activities for the whole family. 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The Magic of Children festival's proceeds benefit establishment of new pediatric asthma program at Washington County Hospital. Hagerstown Community College Show Choir's Christmas Show, "The Best Time of the Year," with holiday favorites, old and new. 7:30 p.m. Friday at HCC's Kepler Theater. Free.

Lighting of City Park Christmas tree and decorations, 7 p.m. Friday. Followed by receptions at Hager House, Mansion House Art Gallery and Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. Includes caroling, petting zoo and performance by Rhinelanders German Band. Free.

Antietam National Battlefield's memorial illumination honors the battle's casualties by placing more than 23,000 luminarias on the battlefield. Drive through the park 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday. Rain date is Dec. 9. Free. Call 301-432-5124 or go to www.nps.gov/anti.

Williamsport's Christmas Parade, Sunday, starts about 4:30 p.m. at Springfield Middle School and goes to Byron Memorial Park, where holiday lights will be lit.

Tree of Lights tree-lighting ceremony in Washington County Hospital's main lobby, 5 p.m. Sunday. Free admission. The hospital auxiliary's Tree of Lights campaign benefits the hospital's surgical services and emergency department. To support the project, buy a $10 light in honor of or in memory of a loved one or friend for the hospital's Tree of Lights.

St. Nicholas Day Fair at St. John's Episcopal Church, parking at corner of West Antietam and South Walnut streets. Food, children's activities, The Sweet Shop, Christmas boutique and meet St. Nicholas. Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Call 301-733-2560.

The Miller House will be decorated for the holidays by local garden clubs with the theme "Christmas around Maryland." 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays to Sundays from Dec. 6 through Dec. 30; closed Dec. 24. Admission fee. 135 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. Call 301-797-8782.




Franklin County, Pa.

Candle Night in downtown Chambersburg, Pa. Begins at 5 p.m. Friday. Participating stores will stay open until at least 9 p.m. with some offering sales, special events or refreshments. Luminarias will line Main Street. Carolers and brass band will tour downtown.

Yuletide in Waynesboro, Pa. Friday to Sunday. Tree-lighting event at Center Square, 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Open houses and Santa visiting downtown businesses on Saturday and Sunday. Carolers stroll Main Street on Friday night and during the weekend. Santa's Secret Workshop for elementary-age children and younger to buy items for no more than $10 an item at old Beck & Benedict building on Main Street, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
