Lioness Club conducts student vision screening

November 29, 2006

Hundreds of children in Washington County Public Schools have had their vision improved through the Hagerstown Lioness Club's annual vision screening, a service the club has performed since 1993.

From Sept. 5 to Oct. 30, the Lionesses screened 7,231 students in 34 public schools. Students in kindergarten through grade 3 are tested for visual acuity, muscle balance and excessive farsightedness. Fifth-graders and eighth-graders are also tested for color blindness.

Of those tested, 821 students were referred to the Washington County Health Department for further testing.

Coordination of this service project was through the efforts of co-chairs May Crabb, Doris Fisher, Sara Jane Hoyle and Betty Morgan.

The following volunteers assisted with student vision screening, fashioned fish-shaped eye occluders, scheduled schools and volunteers, gave clerical assistance, provided photography and public relations assistance, and performed other related tasks.
