Mail Call

November 24, 2006

"Thank you for the recent article on Mr. Chaney, the waving gentleman. I always consider it a lucky day when I see him when I'm driving around."

- Hagerstown

"Last week was visitation at Maugansville Elementary and it went real well. I visited on Tuesday along with quite a few other parents/family members.

The gentleman who was minding the entrance to the school was kept very busy and was a great asset the whole week. The article in the paper that featured him several weeks ago was great; he is a wonderful help to the staff at the school. With all the visitors last week, the school secretary would not have gotten any work done at all. My personal visit to Maugansville Elementary was a very pleasant one."

- Hagerstown

"This is to all the people complaining about the JFK runners. It is really a shame that you cannot sacrifice a few hours out of the year to allow someone to do what they enjoy. It would be different if this took place every week, then I would be inclined to agree with you. The JFK is the oldest event (of its kind) in the United States and brings a lot of recognition to Washington County. There may be things that you enjoy doing that may be an inconvenience to others, but they give you the privilege to do so without complaining."

"The Washington County Commissioners should not give $1.1 million to the hospital. This hospital serves more than this community. It serves people in other neighboring states and I don't think we taxpayers should have to foot the bill. So what if they raise the prices, then it will be paid by all people who use the hospital and not just the people of Washington County."

"In local public restrooms, I've noticed that fewer than half the people make any effort at washing their hands. And of those who do stop at the water faucet, the majority only run water over their hands without applying soap. Probably fewer than one in 10 actually leave the restroom with clean hands. And the well-dressed are no more likely to wash than the guy in blue jeans. Think about that next time you shake hands or eat from a salad bar."

- Hagerstown

"Thank you to the wonderful staff at Reeders Memorial Nursing Home, where my mother spent the last 18 months of her life. The staff loved and treated us like family. May God bless each and every one of you the way that you blessed us."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Some people drive like idiots anymore. This is to the one that hit and killed my cat on Broadfording Road on Saturday. Had you been coming down the hill, I could have understood, but since you were coming up the hill, there's no reason why you could not have slowed down or even stopped and maybe blown your horn so the cat would have had a chance."

"I'd just like to know if anyone can tell us when they're gonna put an E85 gas pump in Washington County somewhere."

- Halfway

"I'm outraged at the judge for the sentence he handed to the cold-hearted, unfeeling person who threw the four innocent little kittens into a fire to suffer a terrible death. There is absolutely no justice in this town for animals."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"The election is over, and the winning candidates are planning for our future. It is a shame that only half of the citizens had to do it. Now let us support our leaders and unite to make this an enjoyable experience for all. Let us pause and count our blessings on Thanksgiving Day."

"I don't know if he is interested, but I feel the next runner-up in the public election should be considered for the new councilman position. After all, he got the votes of the people."

- Hagerstown

"I just wanted to call in and congratulate the Eastern Elementary staff for their Citizens of the Month. We were at the Sharpsburg McDonald's last Tuesday, and two staff members brought in about 30 students, and they were the best behaved. You couldn't have asked for better behavior out of them. The staff was just excellent, for two people to have that many kids. Congratulations to the teachers, the staff, and most of all the students."

- Hagerstown

"Concerning the replacement for Councilman Aleshire, I think it should go to someone in the same party, and it should be the next highest votegetter in the general election, who took the time to run and everything for the election. It should go to the person next in line, and if he don't want it, it should go down that line until they exhaust all them, then pick someone from the general public."

- Hagerstown

"I live in the state of Maryland, in Hagerstown. When the Baltimore Ravens play football, we don't get the Baltimore Ravens. We'll get Washington, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh. In addition, in Monday papers, the Ravens always get second billing to the Redskins as regards to score."

- Smithsburg
