Sergeant requests support for his platoon

November 24, 2006

A 1982 North Hagerstown High School graduate is asking his hometown to support his military platoon based in Germany.

Sgt. 1st Class Randy Sprecher, who grew up in the West End, has asked for sponsorship of the 2nd Platoon 9th Military Police Detachment through notes, cards or care packages. Small items such as prepaid AT&T phone cards, homemade cookies or treats, and online shopping gift cards always are appreciated, he said.

"I have 20 soldiers assigned, and most of them are single with no family support in this country," Sprecher said in an e-mail.

The soldiers, most in their early 20s, are assigned to a military correctional facility in Mannheim, Germany, for at least two years. Their duties are comparable to those of correctional officers at domestic state correctional facilities.

"There will always be a challenge for the soldiers without family, especially when serving for the first time overseas," Sprecher said.

Sprecher said most of the soldiers will not be able to return home for the holidays because of the nature of their work.

The unit includes Staff Sgt. Cynara Robinson, Staff Sgt. Kenyatta Moses, Sgt. Carlos Rivera, Sgt. Amanda Deel, Sgt. Derrick Braddick, Sgt. Jesus Ruelas, Sgt. Nickie Wileman, Sgt. Donald Martellotti, Sgt. Eric Purdell, Spc. Romon Ungos, Spc. Joshua Belle, Spc. Jillian Sorich, Spc. Kristi Kantorowicz, Spc. Benjamin Oblisk, Spc. Eric Clark, Pfc. Johnathon Bellew, Pfc. Orlando Rodgers, Pfc. Charles Dennis, Pvt. William Johns, Pvt. Scott Stinson and Pvt. Thomas King.

Correspondence, in care of Sprecher, can be sent to the soldiers at Sfc. Randy Sprecher, CMR 418, Box 1372, APO, AE 09058
