Train display on view Friday

November 22, 2006

The Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum at 300 S. Burhans Blvd. will open its doors Friday for the 17th annual Trains of Christmas display.

The exhibit features a new "O"-scale, three-rail Christmas layout with steam and diesel trains by Lionel, MTH, Williams, Weaver and others, operating in a snow scene on four levels.

The scene includes miniature skiers, tunnels, buildings, cars and snow-capped trees. The display evokes the sights and sounds of real trains; many of the engines utilize liquid smoke to give the effect of trains puffing down the track and sound chips provide train sounds.

The detailed holiday display takes approximately two months to put together, and is never the same from year to year.

The Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., as well as Dec. 26 from 1 to 5 p.m. It will be closed on Christmas Eve. The Trains of Christmas will be on display from Nov. 24 to Feb. 25.
