Election results become final

November 22, 2006|by ANDREW SCHOTZ

The last of the county's absentee and provisional ballots were counted Friday, making the Nov. 7 general election results official.

The results and order of finish in local races stayed the same as they were on the night of the election.

In two of the closest races - Washington County Commissioners and Washington County Board of Education - the candidate winning a seat increased his lead over the next-best candidate.

The Washington County Board of Elections opened and counted about 4,100 absentee and provisional ballots - cast by voters whose registration was in doubt at the polls - in the last two weeks.

Statewide results won't be official until Dec. 8, when the Board of State Canvassers meets, said Donna Duncan, the director of the Maryland State Board of Elections' election management division.

The Board of State Canvassers includes the secretary of state, the comptroller, the attorney general, the treasurer and the clerk of the Court of Appeals, she said.
