Boonsboro sends 5 FFA'ers to national convention

November 21, 2006

Victoria Hume, Megan Thompson, Sammy Spencer, Amy Rhoderick and Sam Elliot along with their advisor, Steve Garland, represented the Boonsboro FFA Chapter at the National FFA Convention, in Indianapolis.

The convention, held Oct. 25 to 28, drew more than 55,000 FFA members, turning the convention hall into a sea of blue jackets.

Sammy Spencer competed in the Agriscience Fair. She presented her experiment on soil separates and porosity in the environmental sciences category of division two, advisor Garland said.

He said she earned a bronze medal for her experiment.

The Boonsboro members helped in representing the state of Maryland at a booth where passersby were told about agriculture in Maryland.

They also attended a workshop "on how to avoid freshman fizzle during the first year of college and attended a very inspirational and motivating speech from Terry Bradshaw," Garland said. Then, too, he said, they went to a rodeo and a mega concert, the latter featuring such stars as Heartland, Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood.

"This trip provided many opportunities for the members, and allowed them to meet many people from all over the United States," Garland said.
