Three-vehicle crash ties up I-70 traffic

November 18, 2006

A three-vehicle accident Friday night on Interstate 70 tied up traffic briefly, but caused no life-threatening injuries, Maryland State Police Sgt. Patrick Morris said.

Trooper 1st Class R. Pittman said Brittany A. Riggleman, 19, of Mercersburg, Pa., who was driving a BMW Mini Cooper, failed to brake for slowing traffic near the westbound I-70 exit at Dual Highway, causing a chain reaction about 8:45 p.m.

Pittman said that the BMW struck a 2004 GM Saturn, which then struck a 2002 Honda Odyssey driven by Jennifer G. Lobello of Frederick, Md.

The driver of the Saturn, Melinda S. Malott, 43, of Williamsport, was taken by ambulance to Washington County Hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries, Pittman said.

Riggleman was charged with failure to control speed to avoid an accident, according to a Maryland State Police press release.

The accident was cleared by 10 p.m., Pittman said. One lane was closed while police investigated the crash, Morris said.
