MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The cause of telephone service outages in Berkeley County Thursday evening were not immediately explained by local emergency officials, who experienced the problem themselves.
"Some areas are working, some don't," said Steve Allen, director of Berkeley County's office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
A 911 dispatcher confirmed their communications center was affected by the outage.
"It just started a little while ago, we don't know what's going on," the emergency official said.
A Berkeley County Sheriff's Department official said attempts to contact certain telephone numbers also were unsuccessful.
Verizon spokesman Lee Gierczynski was traveling from Charleston, W.Va. to Pittsburgh, Pa., and was not immediately able to comment about the reported outages.
