Wildcats fall in five

November 12, 2006

OAKLAND, Md. - Williamsport's run as a Class 1A state volleyball champion came to an end Saturday at Southern Garrett, as the top-seeded Rams defeated the third-seeded Wildcats in five games, 23-25, 23-25, 25-15, 28-26, 15-11, in the Maryland Class 1A West final.

The Wildcats had won the 1A state title each of the last four years.

"We played well. I couldn't have asked for a better effort," Wildcats coach Emily Crabtree said. "It's one of those matches you don't want either team to lose."

Williamsport (13-5) pulled out the first two games, but the undefeated Rams (17-0) roared back in Game 3 and carried it through a tense Game 4 all the way to the decisive Game 5 win.

"We just had a letdown in Game 3, and that was the story," Crabtree said. "We made an effort in Game 4, but they took the wind out of our sails."

Hailee Growden had 11 kills and 14 digs, Lindsey Kneisley had 18 assists, Christine Barnes had 17 assists, Brittany Malott had 23 digs and Jessica Bennett - playing through tonsillitis - added eight kills and 15 digs.
