'Night of January 16' opens at Apollo

November 09, 2006|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Because the audience decides how the story ends, the cast of the Apollo Civic Theatre's production of "Night of January 16th" faces the challenge of leaving an emotional impression on the audience without telling the viewers how to think or feel.

The show opens at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at the Apollo Civic Theatre and will run various dates throughout November. Director Charles "Joey" Thorne, 32, said directing the show has some limitations. In the play, a secretary is accused of killing her former boss/lover and must stand trial. In the end, the jury - 12 people selected from the audience - must determine her fate.

"I want to find a balance so that the audience can come to their own conclusions," Thorne said. "I don't want to hammer an opinion over their heads."

"I'm always intrigued by what the audience members take away from the show," he said. "People judge based on what they bring in. They have biases."

Kristen Shriver plays the lead role of Karen Andre, the woman accused of murder. She said it's almost impossible to insert her personal biases into the role because she's nothing like the character she plays.

"She's tough. She's very much not like me. She's very cool, very confident - or so it seems," said Shriver, 31, of Hedgesville, W.Va. "Think Sharon Stone in 'Basic Instinct.'"

Shriver said it also helped that she hasn't been able to decide for herself whether her character should be found guilty.

"That makes it easier," she said. "I can kind of play both sides of the fence. It's like a cat-and-mouse game with her."
