Update - Doyle apparent winner in 57th District

November 08, 2006

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Del. John Doyle, D-Jefferson, had a healthy lead over Republican Robert Murto Tuesday night in the race for the 57th House of Delegates seat in West Virginia.

Doyle had 3,447 votes compared to Murto's 2,110 votes, according to complete, unofficial results.

Murto, 58, of 887 Cherry Run Road in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., said he was frustrated by the state's poor business climate, a problem illustrated by West Virginia's ranking in 49th place in terms of its business climate by Forbes magazine.

Doyle, 64, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., said Murto is right about a lot of the problems facing West Virginia, but the Republican failed to recognize the progress that has been made, such as significant improvements in the state's unemployment rate, increasing the college-going rate among high school seniors and the Legislature's work to improve workers' compensation.
