Mooney edging Greenway by small margin

Sen. Alex X. Mooney, R-Washington/Frederick, held the edge over Democratic challenger Candy O. Greenway in his race for re-election in Maryland Senate District 3.

With all precincts reporting, Mooney led Greenway by a margin of 19,772 to 18,172.

But a total of 4,019 absentee ballots had been issued in Senate District 3 as of Tuesday afternoon, according to elections officials. Of those, 2,909 had been returned.

Mooney, 35, of Frederick, is an outspoken conservative who was first elected to the Maryland Senate in 1998. He currently serves on the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. A graduate of Dartmouth College, he is executive director of the National Journalism Center, a division of the conservative Young America's Foundation.

Greenway, 53, also of Frederick, is a member of the Democratic Central Committee in Frederick County. A graduate of Georgia State University, she is a retired information technology consultant.
