Update - Miller triumphs in 53rd District

November 08, 2006|by MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Johnathan Miller, the Republican Party's nominee for the West Virginia House of Delegates' 53rd District, beat his Democratic opponent in Tuesday's election, according to an unofficial tally of all 17 precincts.

Miller, 22, of 342 Quarry Road in Bunker Hill, W.Va., received 2,570 votes, or 58.6 percent. Burton, 57, of 130 Audrey Lane, Inwood, W.Va., received 1,811 votes, or 41.3 percent.

The apparent win by Miller continues his party's unbroken hold on the southern Berkeley County single-delegate district since 1982, when it was created, records show.

Miller, a mortgage broker, will replace Del. Vic Roberts, R-Berkeley, who opted not to seek re-election. Members of the House of Delegates are paid $15,000 per year.
