Mail Call

November 08, 2006

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I think that everybody should be fingerprinted, no matter who they are. That way you could always find these deadbeat fathers when they apply for a job."

- Hagerstown

"To the Hagerstown person who says Republicans will do anything to attack the Democrats: What about the Foley scandal? If he did something wrong, it's his fault, and not just because he's a Republican. You say don't blame all the Democrats for one or two indiscretions, so the same goes for Republicans. Don't label us all immoral because one might have done something wrong. Think about it."

- Clear Spring

"I find it really interesting that the same people that are now talking about Michael Steele changing his position since he joined Congress were hard-core backing John Kerry for doing the same thing in the presidential election in 2004. I don't think it really matters whether or not they change their opinions. I don't think that that's a basis for voting. Personally, I hate political advertising anyway, because all they tell is what the other guy stands for. They never say that they're against it. There needs to be some kind of serious turnaround in political advertising within the next couple of years, or else I'm not gonna vote anymore."

"I've been watching with interest about the speeding school buses, and I've even been following a couple of them, with 35 mph speed limits going 50 mph, with the children up running around on the buses. About a week ago I saw a bus with a deputy sheriff in full uniform driving. I guess that's helping to keep children under control."

- Smithsburg

"'You never find yourself until you face the truth.' That is a saying by Pearl Bailey. Of course, that's the first thing my husband reads. He doesn't read any other part of the paper, so it's best you'd better hang on to that. You're doing a beautiful job."

- Hagerstown

"My parents taught me to think before I run my mouth, so that tells you I'm a Republican."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about this caller from Rohrersville. The Republicans now, nothing is their fault. Everything is either the Democrats or the media. About Congress not providing the military with equipment, the Republicans are in charge. They're the majority. It's not Democrats. The Democrats have no say whatsoever. It's all Republicans."

- Hagerstown

"I agree 100 percent with John Kerry, the statement he made about education and the troops. He did not mean to hurt the troops at all. What he meant was to tell the truth about Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. They are the ones who sent our boys down there, and they should apologize for the 3,000 deaths and 10,000 injured."

- Washington County

"At about 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, I was driving down Boyd Road, close to the 18000 block. There was a little three-legged Chihuahua running down the road. If anybody is missing this dog ... it didn't have a collar on, and it ran from me. It was very dark, and thankfully I saw it before I hit it. Please keep an eye on your dog so it doesn't get hurt."

- Clear Spring

"Please don't cancel The Daily Mail. I like reading it in the afternoon, and I like it because it covers Hagerstown much more than the morning paper that covers West Virginia and Pennsylvania."

- Williamsport

"I'm calling about the pre-recorded political phone calls. I have a sick mother in the hospital, and when these politicians start this stuff, it's ridiculous. They have no right to cut up a telemarketer when they're doing this. So I'm not voting for any of them."

"I saw on a History Channel program about spies in Vietnam. The very last statement they made at the end of the show was 'I hope if anything they've learned about having the right intelligence before we go to war.' Hmmm. Bring back any memories?"

- Hagerstown

"If they drop The Daily Mail then I'm gonna drop my subscription."

- Hagerstown

"I have a son serving in Iraq, and for the sake of him, we need to vote for the politicians who will support our troops, not have them run home with their tails between their legs like we did in Vietnam. The Kennedy/Kerry liberals have never supported our troops, and do not support our troops now. We should be united with our troops in Iraq. Whether you agree or not whether we should be there is one thing. We are there, and we need to fight to win."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in regards to The Daily Mail being discarded for just one newspaper. If they do that, I hope they carry all the funnies from The Daily Mail into The Morning Herald, because the funnies are about the only thing that's worth reading in the paper anymore."

- Hagerstown

"I can't believe people keep saying that we should not be in Iraq. I wonder if anybody understands that if we don't fight them there, we will be fighting them here. Those of us who have already fought for our country are not willing to fight them here, because this is what we fought for. Think about that."

- Hagerstown
