Edwards coasts to victory

November 08, 2006|by TAMELA BAKER

Del. George Edwards, R-Garrett/Allegany, was coasting into the Maryland Senate late Tuesday with a comfortable lead over Democratic opponent Thomas Conlon in legislative District 1.

The district includes all of Garrett and Allegany counties and the westernmost portion of Washington County, including Hancock and Clear Spring.

With 57 of the total 59 precincts in the district reporting, Edwards was leading 22,491 to 8,279.

The plain-spoken Edwards, 58, is a Grantsville businessman and served six terms in the House of Delegates, where he served on the House Appropriations Committee. He spent his last term as House Minority Leader.

Conlon, 82, lives in Cumberland.

Maryland senators serve four-year terms and are paid a yearly salary of $43,500.
