Weaver retains Circuit Clerk position

November 08, 2006|by TARA REILLY

Incumbent Washington County Circuit Clerk Dennis J. Weaver overwhelmingly won a sixth term in office in Tuesday's election, according to incomplete, unofficial results.

Weaver, a Democrat, had a sizable lead over Republican challenger Ernest E. Pletcher with 38 of 50 precincts reporting.

This election was the first time that Weaver has been opposed.

With 38 of 50 precincts reporting, Weaver received 16,265 votes, while Pletcher received 7,222 votes.

"I think the voters are pretty smart," Weaver said. "They recognize that if you have somebody ... doing a good job, there's no reason to change."

Weaver said he wasn't worried about losing the race, because all the feedback he received was positive. He also offered praise for Pletcher.

"He's a nice guy," Weaver said. "I've met him a couple times."

Weaver has held the position for five terms. He first was elected in 1986. Before that, he served 13 years as deputy clerk.
