MERCERSBURG, Pa. - James Buchanan High School's FFA Agricultural Sales team - Garrett Rice, Garrison Pleasanter, Stephanie Jones and Julie St. Clair - won a silver medal in the national competition.

In the event, the team did a sales presentation on selling a 317 John Deere Skid Steer. They also had to answer 50 multiple choice questions on agriculture sales and marketing. Each student had individual practicum on customer relations - solving a customer's problem.

They also had a group project involving a market analysis and sales situation, in which they were judged on their ability to work together in solving and presenting the situation.

Another Buchanan team won a silver medal in the national Livestock Evaluation competition.

Team members were Matthew Stahl, Nicholas Wingert, Heather Hartung and Tyler Funk.

In the competition, each team had to judge seven classes of breeding and market livestock and give four sets of oral reasons to justify their placing of the livestock. They also had to evaluate three classes of keep/cull livestock, do one class grading beef cattle, and take a livestock management test.

Buchanan student Ashley Brown won a silver medal in the national Agricultural Interview competition.

In this, she had to do three job interviews, write a resume and cover letter, complete a job application and write a follow-up thank you letter.

Shaw coached all of the teams.
