Art school and gallery seeks board members

Contemporary School of the Arts & Gallery Inc. is seeking community members to participate in the art class programming and gallery activities by volunteering on its advisory board. A term of service is one year.

Activities of the board include fundraising, writing grants and serving on a jazz concert committee.

Black tie or not - event to benefit EMS

SHARPSBURG - A black-tie optional fundraising event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Captain Benders Tavern, 111 E. Main St., and Antietam Cafe, 113 E. Main St.

The evening will honor Sharpsburg hometown heroes for their dedication to safety, medical response and rescue. The event includes a three-course wine tasting dinner, introductions, raffles and music. Proceeds will benefit Sharpsburg Area Emergency Medical Services with a goal of purchasing emergency-response equipment.


Tickets cost $45 per person and are available in advance at Captain Benders; $10 donation at the door after 10 p.m.

Naturalist Ilona Popper speaking Wednesday

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Local writer and naturalist Ilona Popper will be the featured speaker at the November meeting of Potomac Valley Audubon Society. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the auditorium of the U.S. Geological Survey's Leetown Science Center, 11649 Leetown Road. The public is invited.

Popper will discuss wolf behavior and current research on wolves, focusing in particular on the wolves of Yellowstone Park.
