Morrison medals at PIAA cross country meet

HERSHEY, Pa. - Chambersburg senior Sarah Morrison was the area's lone medal winner at the PIAA state championships Saturday.

Morrison placed 15th in the Class AAA girls race, covering the 3.1-mile course in 18:51, to lead the Trojans to an 11th-place team finish in the 24-team, 284-runner field.

Also for the Chambersburg girls - the area's only runners who competed as a team - Haley Thomas was 42nd (19:24), Laurie Jones 110th (20:16), Elizabeth Strickler 180th (20:51) and Ali Lambert 186th (20:55).

Shippensburg junior Neely Spence, the daughter of 1991 world marathon bronze medalist Steve Spence, was the champion in 18:07.

In the Class AA girls race, James Buchanan's Lindsey Hollenshead was 145th in 21:17.

In the Class AAA boys race, Chambersburg's Channon Riggs finished 120th in 17:00 and Greencastle-Antrim's Tim Wertner was 131st in 17:04.


McConnellsburg's Chris Snyder finished 74th in 17:21 in the Class AA boys race.


St. James 54, Avalon 16

ST. JAMES - Jimmy Sutch rushed for 260 yards on 17 carries, scoring four touchdowns - including a 92-yard score - in his last game as a senior for St. James as the Saints routed Avalon (3-7).

Eddie Dorsey returned the second-half kickoff 81 yards for his first touchdown, and added a 40-yard interception return in the fourth quarter for the Saints (4-5). Drew St. Lawrence opened the scoring in the first quarter by returning a fumble 37 yards, while Barrett Brown ran for 57 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Kiski 20, Mercersburg 7

SALTSBURG, Pa. - Bill McClintick ran for two touchdowns to lead Kiski School past Mercersburg Academy.

Kenny Burns scored Mercersburg's lone touchdown on a 42-yard run in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 14-7.

Burns was 9-of-18 passing for 87 yards, 56 of which came on a completion to Colin Jones. Cameron Jones rushed for a team-high 64 yards on nine carries for the Blue Storm, who finished the year winless at 0-10.


Winters Mill 3, South 1

WESTMINSTER, Md. - South Hagerstown fell in four games to Winters Mill in a Maryland Class 2A West first-round match. The Rebels finish the season 6-9.

Broadfording loses in semis of Md. Christian School Tournament

LANHAM, Md. - Broadfording Christian Academy participated in the Maryland Christian School tournament, going 2-1 in pool play before falling in the semifinals to New Life Christian.

The Lions defeated Lanham (25-8, 25-15) and Kings (25-7, 25-11) and lost to Washington Christian Academy (25-9, 27-25) in pool play and fell 16-25, 25-21, 15-12 to New Life.

Rebecca Adams had 37 assists, 17 digs and 10 aces on the day while Sierra Litten added 20 digs and eight aces, Hannah Young tallied 16 kills and 14 digs and Emily Stransky had 15 kills and 13 digs. All-Tournament selection Emily Ahalt had 18 digs, 11 kills and 10 aces for the Lions (19-11) while Danielle DuBois recorded 19 digs, 18 kills and 10 aces, Jessica Spielman had nine aces and Taylor Shaffer added 18 digs.
