Smithsburg 3, Hancock 0

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg swept Hancock 25-13, 25-11, 25-10 in the first round of the Maryland Class 1A West playoffs.

For the Leopards (5-10), Valerie Smith had 19 assists and 10 service points, Erika Mong had 13 service points, including nine aces, Nikki Siefert had 15 service points, including six aces, and nine kills and Jenny Nalley had six kills.

Kaley Jenkins had four kills for the Panthers (3-13).

Smithsburg plays at Fort Hill in a quarterfinal Monday at 7 p.m.

Clear Spring 3, Beall 0

FROSTBURG, Md. - Amanda Jenkins had 17 kills as Clear Spring defeated Beall 25-5, 25-13, 25-22 to advance in the Maryland Class 1A West playoffs.

Emily Pinkham had seven kills and five aces, Brittany Smetzer had five aces and 11 digs and Sarah Holler had 11 service points and 10 digs to lead the Blazers (7-7), while Katie Blickenstaff had 16 assists and Emily Steinacker added 11 assists.

Parkersburg 2, Jefferson 0

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - Defending champion Parkersburg defeated previously unbeaten Jefferson in the West Virginia state semifinals to earn another trip to the championship game.

Tim Stephens scored off a corner kick for the Big Reds (23-1) with a minute left until halftime. Cam Lemley added an unassisted goal in the 43rd minute. Both teams took four shots on goal.

Jefferson, making its first appearance in the state tournament, finished with a 22-1-1 record.




GIRLS SOCCER



Parkersburg 3, Jefferson 0

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - Parkersburg advanced to today's West Virginia state championship game by defeating Jefferson (20-2).

Parkersburg (19-2-2) scored all of its goals in the second half. Katie Roberts scored on a penalty kick in the game's 47th minute after Chelsey Maiden was tripped inside the box. Emma Levin-Nielsen scored in the 66th minute and Maiden added a goal with two minutes left in the game.
