Man who allegedly pointed handgun at two faces charges

One charge was dismissed during a preliminary hearing for a 31-year-old Hagerstown man who allegedly pointed a handgun at two people on Oct. 1 on Berkson Avenue.

Donny Martin Verece, 31, of 34 W. Church St., is charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a handgun, illegal possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm within city limits. He appeared for a preliminary hearing Tuesday, according to Washington County District Court records.

According to a charging document, witnesses told Hagerstown Police Department officers that Verece fired two shots into the air after arguing with his estranged wife on Berkson Avenue, near where his new girlfriend lives. He allegedly then pointed the handgun at another woman and the woman's niece.

When police confronted Verece, he had no weapons with him, according to the charging document.

A charge of a being a felon in possession of a firearm was dropped during the hearing Tuesday, according to court records.
