Chamber makes final picks

The Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday announced its picks in state senate and delegate races.

Senate District 1: George C. Edwards, a Republican running against Democrat Thomas Conlon

Senate District 2: Donald F. Munson, the Republican incumbent, who is unopposed

Delegate Subdistrict 1C: LeRoy E. Myers Jr., the Republican incumbent, whose opponent is Democrat Brian K. Grim

Delegate Subdistrict 2A: Robert A. McKee, the Republican incumbent, who is unopposed

Delegate Subdistrict 2B: Christopher B. Shank, the Republican incumbent, who is unopposed

Delegate Subdistrict 2C: "In the Chamber's evaluation, Paul Muldowney and John Donoghue scored comparably," the endorsement announcement says. "The Chamber feels that, though they would bring different strengths to the job, each candidate would be an asset to Washington County's business community in the Maryland House of Delegates over the next four years." Donoghue, a Democrat, is the incumbent. Muldowney, a Republican, is challenging him.

Last week, the chamber publicized its endorsements in the races for governor, U.S. Senate, Washington County Commissioners and Washington County Board of Education. It waited until after its forum for state candidates Wednesday before announcing its state senate and delegate picks.

Two unions pick O'Malley

While in Washington County on Wednesday, Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley picked up endorsements in person from two local unions.

One was American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 2677, which represents about 100 Washington County highway, landfill, transportation and 911 employees.

The other was AFSCME Local 3373, which includes about 70 officers in the Hagerstown Police Department.

Officer Wayne Hose, Local 3373's president, said members are concerned about a "revolving-door" system in which criminals return to the streets.

O'Malley is running against Republican incumbent Gov. Robert Ehrlich.

Business PAC finishes endorsement list

About a month after announcing one local endorsement, the Maryland Business Leadership Political Action Committee has distributed its other picks.

In races involving Washington County, the committee - which is affiliated with Maryland Business for Responsive Government (MBRG) - has endorsed:

· State Senate District 1: George C. Edwards

· Delegate Subdistrict 1C: LeRoy E. Myers Jr.

· Senate District 1: Donald F. Munson

· Delegate Subdistrict 2A: Robert A. McKee

· Delegate Subdistrict 2B: Christopher B. Shank

· Delegate Subdistrict 2C: Paul Muldowney

· State Senate District 3: Alex X. Mooney

· Delegate Subdistrict 3B: Richard B. Weldon Jr.

The political action committee endorsed all incumbents who scored at least 70 percent in MBRG's annual evaluation of business votes, although those who scored lower weren't automatically eliminated from consideration.

The group endorsed Muldowney because of his previous record during two terms as a delegate.

The committee knew a month ago that it would endorse Muldowney, but took more time to finish its full list of picks, according to Robert O.C. Worcester, Maryland Business Leadership PAC's treasurer.

Muldowney is running against Democratic incumbent John P. Donoghue.
