Have a ball with MSO guild

The Maryland Symphony Orchestra isn't the only organization celebrating its 25th season.

So is the MSO Guild, a nonprofit group with a mission to support the symphony.

The guild's largest fundraiser is its annual ball - called the Silver Sonata Ball this year. It's being held Saturday evening at Fountain Head Country Club, north of Hagerstown.

About 260 people attended last year's ball, which raised close to $60,000 for the MSO's education programs and operating costs, says Barbara Henderson, guild president. The fundraiser also helped the guild sponsor this season's MasterWorks IV, to be held in March.

The country club's recent expansion allows for a bigger ball. About 300 people are expected, Henderson says. Guild members would like to raise as much money as they did last year, if not more with the bigger ball.

Most of the money is raised during the black-tie affair's silent and live auctions.

This year's live auction includes a dinner for eight at the home of MSO Executive Director Andrew Kipe with Music Director Elizabeth Schulze as a guest. The dinner will be prepared by Chef Norman Morse.

The live auction also will feature a sterling silver necklace valued at more than $1,700 and accented with canary crystals and diamonds; an oil painting by R. Benjamin Jones, who lives east of Hagerstown; and an Alaskan cruise for two.

The silent auction includes dinners, resort packages, Baltimore Ravens and Orioles tickets, dcor, jewelry, clothing, a private tour of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and a variety of services.

A preview party for the silent auction will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the country club. The preview party is complimentary for ball ticket-holders and costs $10 for others, who may place a sealed bid for silent auction items.

The ball also features dinner, including beef filet and a fried crab cake with fresh horseradish and panko crust, and dancing to the Howard Burns Big Band Orchestra.
