Wolff names area man to dairy promotion board

October 31, 2006

An area man has been appointed the newest member of the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program board.

The new member is Vernon Horst, of Chambersburg, Pa., state Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff announced last week.

Wolff said he has reappointed six others to the board. They are: Bertha Ackerson, Marion Center, Pa.; Harold Bailey, Roaring Spring, Pa.; Christine Cooney, Spartansburg, Pa.; Raymond Diebold, Altoona, Pa.; Rita Kennedy, Valencia, Pa.; and Harold Shaulis, Somerset, Pa.

"We are fortunate to have dedicated dairy producers who take an active role in guiding and leading the industry through programs like the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program, helping dairy to remain the economic driver for agriculture - the number one industry in the state," Wolff said.

The board's 21 members are nominated by other dairy producers. Each term lasts three years.

The board partnered recently with the agriculture department's Center for Dairy Excellence to advance Pennsylvania's dairy industry through promotional and educational efforts.

The promotion board is one of six commodity boards overseen by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Market Development. Each group is self-funded through check-off programs and conducts marketing and research programs to advance each industry.
