October 30, 2006

MOUNT AETNA - A 92-year-old Cavetown woman died Sunday afternoon in a two-car accident that sent four other people to the hospital, Maryland State Police said.

The crash occurred at about 3 p.m. on Md. 66 south of Mt. Aetna Road.

According to police, Bun Hwang was a passenger in a 2005 Honda Accord driven by her daughter, Esther K. Smith, 57. The women lived at 22518 Jefferson Blvd. in Cavetown.

While traveling through a slight curve to the left, the Accord veered on to the right shoulder, and Smith overcorrected and lost control, Sgt. Andrew Smith said. Esther Smith's vehicle skidded back across the northbound lane and into the southbound lane, where it struck a 2003 Honda Civic driven by Lara Anne Forbes Ecker, 32, of 107 Eagles Ridge in Smithsburg. According to police, the passenger side of Smith's Accord struck the front end of Ecker's Civic in the southbound lane of Md. 66.

After the collision, Smith's Accord skidded off the southbound shoulder and down an embankment before coming to rest about 50 feet from the shoulder. Ecker's Civic came to rest near the point of the collision in the southbound lane, police said.

According to police, Hwang, who was in the front passenger seat of the Accord, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel.

Police said Smith sustained head injuries. She was in serious condition at Washington County Hospital, a nursing supervisor said Sunday night.

Ecker and her two rear-seat passengers, Rowan Forbes Ecker, 20 months, and Jonah Forbes Ecker, 3, both of Smithsburg, were treated and released, the supervisor said.
