Wildcats open playoffs with a win

WILLIAMSPORT - Leah Mellott had two goals and an assist as seventh-seeded Williamsport beat No. 10-seed Westmar 3-0 in a Maryland Class 1A West first-round match Thursday.

Morgan Smith had a goal and an assist, Julie Hancock had an assist and Alexis Bryan posted eight saves to record the shutout for the Wildcats (8-6-1).

Williamsport will play at No. 2 seed Beall in the quarterfinals Tuesday.


Calvary Christian 3, Grace 2

CRESAPTOWN, Md. - Andy Lytle and Nick Bunting each scored a goal and Pat Salvagno had two assists for Grace in a Mason Dixon Christian Conference Tournament semifinal loss to Calvary Christian.


The Knights (12-3-2) will host Cumberland Valley Christian in the tournament consolation match Saturday at 11 a.m.

Potomac 3, St. James 1

SAINT JAMES - Hunter Lind scored to stake St. James to a 1-0 lead at halftime, but Potomac School scored three second-half goals to win the Mid Atlantic Conference matchup.

Cyrus Morgan had 12 saves for the Saints (4-13-1, 0-12).


Greencastle 3, James Buchanan 1

DILLSBURG, Pa. - Julia Stein had 13 kills and Beth Berger had 11 kills and three blocks as Greencastle defeated James Buchanan in the Mid-Penn Class AA final.

Kelsey Gearhart and Katie Lutz had nine kills and five blocks each, Amanda Ritchey had 25 assists, Kortney Eshleman had 23 assists and Sabrina Harbaugh had 24 digs for the Blue Devils.

Greencastle defeated Northern 3-0 earlier Thursday to earn a spot in the final. Kortney Eshleman had five kills, 16 assists and four aces, Michelle Negley had eight kills and four aces, Beth Berger had six kills and Katie Lutz and Julia Stein had five kills each.

Greencastle will begin play in the PIAA District 3-AA Tournament at Lower Dauphin on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Mercersburg 3, Martinsburg 0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Lizz Harvey and Cree Riley each had nine kills to lead Mercersburg Academy over Martinsburg, 25-19, 25-10, 25-19.

Laura Willwerth had 12 service points for the Blue Storm (8-8), and Kelsie Cubit had nine digs.

JV: Mercersburg 2-1.

Notre Dame 3, Mercersburg 0

MIDDLEBURG, Va. - Cree Riley had five kills and Whitney Davis and Noelle Sarabino each had six service points for Mercersburg in the Blue Storm's 25-11, 25-23, 25-12 loss to Notre Dame Academy on Wednesday.

JV: Mercersburg, 2-0.

Southern Fulton 3, Northern Bedford 0

LOYSBURG, Pa. - Renee Spade had nine kills and 13 digs as Southern Fulton defeated Northern Bedford, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20.

Natasha Bard had six kills and 17 digs and Courtney Trainor had six kills and 13 digs to lead the Indians (16-3, 11-3), while Sam Bain had 10 service points and Rebecca Schriever added 29 assists.
