Mail Call

October 25, 2006

"Why is it on a soap opera when a person goes to jail, their visitor is allowed right in the cell with them? That is so unreal. I can't believe that they even do that, because it's not like that in real life, so I don't know why they even do it. It seems dumb to me."

- Hagerstown

"So Paul Swartz wants to be a commissioner again. When he was in office, he was gung-ho about spending taxpayers' money for a new baseball stadium. Now he has an idea about sending all kids to college. No, thanks. We need someone to do something for us senior citizens on limited incomes before we lose our houses. For Swartz, once was enough."

- Hagerstown

"The president, Republicans, and conservative commentators will tell you if you listen that the increase in violence in Iraq is part of an effort to control the elections. The Republicans have been using fear for years in order to control the elections. If George Bush and the Republicans would look at the numbers, the violence has been going up in Iraq for over six months. In fact, Iraq is worse now than ever before, but it's not terrorists. It's a civil war. The government has admitted there probably are not more than one or two thousand terrorists in Iraq. The rest are locals out to get revenge for past grievances and to kill those of a different religion. So don't believe the Republicans when they tell you that if you vote Democrat, the terrorists win. The terrorists have been winning for a long time in Iraq. Maybe it's time to vote Democrat and throw the losing Republicans out."

"When Virginia brought these refugees over here, why didn't they take them to their own state rather than dropping them off here in Hagerstown? I'm sure a lot of people would like to know the answer to this question. It is the truth, and I think something should be done about it."

- Hagerstown

"I always thought that your medical condition was private, but I have just been diagnosed with diabetes several weeks ago, and you cannot believe the information I'm getting from insurance companies about diabetes and so forth. I just wonder if there's anything you can do to avoid a situation like this."

- Hagerstown

"I can see why Bush won the election in the last election. The people in Ohio must be doozies. How can you not put a man to death that killed a family of five? He's suing because he's too fat? Are you kidding me? Maybe Ohio shouldn't be allowed to vote anymore. They don't sound they've got all their marbles."

- Hagerstown

"I see in your profile of Del. Donoghue, he stated that Wal-Mart's health care was inadequate. I didn't know he was a health care specialist. How many other corporations within Washington County and Maryland have adequate insurance coverage for their employees? I think he needs to get with it."

- Hagerstown

"I want to thank you for putting my thing in the paper on Friday, but when you put it in you changed the wording. What I put down was 'How close are we to the goose step?', not 'two-step'. It's to imply that we're becoming an undemocratic country."

- Boonsboro

"I'm handicapped and I would like to know if anyone takes people around to the grocery stores or takes them out to lunch or to the doctor. I don't drive anymore. Please leave it in Mail Call."

"Thanks to the very honest person that was shopping at Food Lion on Pennsylvania Avenue Friday afternoon. They found my credit cards and turned them in. I'm very thankful there is honest people, and thanks again to the cashier that they turned them in to and the manager."

- Hagerstown

"A friend of mine once asked me 'You mean to tell me you'd never fight for your country?' My answer was no, not until they show me some respect. If they invade my home, invade my town of Hagerstown, yes, I'd fight them, but the government doesn't care about us. They'd rather give illegal aliens amnesty and my Social Security money and health care for nothing. I don't even have health care anymore because I'm on disability. I'm an American citizen all my life, and they'd rather give it to them than me. No, I would not fight for this country because they don't care about me. Until they show me that they do, I never would."

- Hagerstown

"Somebody put in the paper about Hancock having tip jars, making their money. What's the difference from having bingo or tip jars? They're both a form of gambling. All churches mostly have bingo."

"I just think it's wonderful, everybody that calls the newspaper to complain about all the politics and this and that. Maybe they should spend more time complaining to the politicians that they vote in."

"Tip jar profit, $12,400,000 - that's $12,400,000 lost by gamblers. It is also 17 percent of the sales. That's twice the take of a gambling casino. People gamble because they like to win. When will they learn that they will win if they play long enough, but also it will cost them in the end run?"
