Winter Street students learn about safety

October 23, 2006

For more than 50 years, children have walked to school at Winter Street Elementary School, the only school in Washington County Public Schools that does not have students come to school on a bus.

In observance of International Walk to School Day on Oct. 4, employees of the Washington County Health Department provided students with packets of items and information to help them understand and practice safety measures on their way to and from school, according to a school system press release.

Each student received reflectors to place on book bags and bicycles to make them more visible when vehicle headlights shine on them, especially on early-morning trips to school.

The Maryland State Highway Safety Office also provided information about safe walking and crossing of intersections.
