Former city school houses hot-selling condominiums

The revitalization of downtown Hagerstown continues with the opening of The Darby Condominiums in the former Antietam Street School at 138 E. Antietam St., one block from the Washington County Hospital.

Tom Plant, president of TBS Investments, recently announced the grand opening of the model unit for The Darby Condominiums. Plant says each unit provides convenience to its owners, as well as an affordable price. The units start in the low $100s.

"The condos are geared toward young professionals from the Frederick or Montgomery County area, and will give these owners a chance to get their foot in the door for owning their own home," Plant said. "Many people can no longer afford to live in Frederick County, so they are moving up here."

The condos are also geared toward another group: "empty nesters" looking to downsize.

Plant said more than 50 percent of the Darby units have already been sold.

"We think Hagerstown is the next Frederick," he added.

The 27 condos are situated on three floors. There are four entrances to the building, two of which are handicapped accessible. Ten-foot ceilings and a 13-foot-wide main hallway give residents a feeling of spaciousness.

The stairways are large and carpeted for ease and comfort of entry and exit.

Because the building was originally a school, windows are abundant and large, permitting a light, airy atmosphere in the living areas. The renovation included installation of double-hung windows with a "tilt-in" feature for ease of cleaning. Residents in the bottom level will appreciate the extra-large window sills, sure to be a location for houseplants.

Floor plans range from a 610-square-foot one-bedroom condo to a 1,750-square-foot three-bedroom plan. The "standard package" condo is a two-bedroom, one bath with full carpeting and all appliances priced at $147,900, according to The Darby Web site. All units are wired for cable and direct TV. Storage areas are available on the lower floor.

Plant said The Darby Condominiums are committed to safety as well as affordable housing. Residents will receive electronic access to a secured, fenced parking lot as well as electronic access to the building.

Control of the Condo Owners Association will convey to the owners once more than 50 percent of the units are both sold and occupied.

The Darby Condos are located minutes from the University System of Maryland Education Center, The Maryland Theatre, City Hall, Memorial Stadium, and many shopping and dining locations. Two right-hand turns will put residents on Washington Street and the Dual Highway for easy access to Interstate 70.

The model unit is open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. and during the week by appointment.
