Pet of the week

October 22, 2006

This 5-year-old Australian shepherd mix was found by some kids who named her Sara. Because she is smart and trains quickly, Sara was chosen to assist in an academy that teaches positive reinforcement techniques to dog trainers. She is a graduate of that program, and, as a reward, her adopters will receive a complimentary six-week group training class at Peaceable Paws in Fairplay.

If you would like to adopt Sara or need more information, visit the Humane Society of Washington County at 13011 Maugansville Road near Hagerstown, or call 301-733-2060.

Pet tip: What should I look for in a trainer?

It is essential that the dog trainer you select uses humane training techniques that encourage appropriate behavior through positive reinforcement such as food, attention, play or praise. Look for a trainer who ignores undesirable responses or withholds rewards until the dog behaves appropriately. Training techniques should never involve yelling, choking, shaking the scruff, tugging on the leash, alpha rolling (forcing the dog onto his back), or other actions that frighten or inflict pain.
