October 21, 2006

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236. You can also send messages via e-mail at

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out. You must include your town or county of residence.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I would like to say thank you to Maugansville Elementary for having someone giving of his time to guard the front entrance of the school. I understand he is doing a great job and enjoys the time he spends there. There are a lot of people - not teachers that enter and exit the school each and every day - this allows the office staff to get their job done without those interruptions. Security of our children should be our 'top priority.' It is good to know that my 6-year-old nephew is safe and so are others!"

"It was going to happen, just a matter of time. I am referring to the (clearing) of the 97 acres on Marsh Pike, off Longmeadow Road. What a beautiful farm it was. Now it is the beginning of another huge subdivision, horrible additional traffic and more children for the overcrowded schools. Most appalling is the (clearing) of the beautiful row of trees, and serene farmland that has been destroyed. If this is progress, I want no part of it."

"This is to the Yankee fans that had made some boasting comments about their playoff and World Series appearances. They have the biggest payroll in all of baseball and can buy a All-Star at about any position. Yes, I'm an Orioles fan and yes they didn't make the playoffs. But I will proudly watch and boast about the Detroit Tigers any day than boast for a franchise that is highly overrated. For not only being a New York team, but for being a team that thinks they can win a championship on paper. Go, Tigers!"

"I have to take issue with the food critics from The Herald-Mail. The crabcake I had the other night at that new restaurant on the Dual Highway was the best I have ever eaten. The service is excellent, the atmosphere is very nice, the prices are really reasonable, and the food is fresh and fabulous!"

"To the caller who said no one could find a decent job, that's baloney. There are many people working two part-time jobs to equal one. If corporations send their work overseas, that is no one's fault but the corporation's, not the president's. There are a lot of good jobs if one has the training and education to do the job. Washilngton County has never ben famous for high-paying jobs but there is work anywhere if one wants to work."

- Hagerstown

"This is in response to the 'Republican' from Hagerstown.Your claim to always vote the party line is really something to be proud of. People like you are the reason this country is in the mess that it is now. I'm a Democrat and I vote for who I think will do the best job for our country no matter what party they belong to. You need to take off your 'blinders' and think for yourself."

- Boonsboro

"We just moved to Mitchell Avenue the first of the month, and we have two grandchildren living with us. Both of them go to Salem Avenue Elementary School. They tell me that there's no buses that run from where we live to the school. I've walked that way with them, and I know I wouldn't be wanting to walk every day. I think something should be done. "

- Hagerstown

"This last bill that Bush just signed, giving him the power to hold over enemy combatants, that is not just people that are Taliban fighters, that is anybody. That could be me or you. If we don't agree with his radical way of thinking and we say something that he thinks goes against the U.S., we could find ourselves declared an enemy combatant and thrown in prison without a lawyer and held for an indefinite period of time. What the Republican Congress and Bush have done to the Constitution is just unbelievable. I can't emphasize enough - please get out and vote. We have to put a stop to this man. The people have the power, and that power is your vote."

- Williamsport

"First we had Mr. Lynn talking about the Barr case, and now we have Mr. Joyce talking about the Hammersla case. Nobody realizes there are family on both sides of this issue. They don't need to be drug through this, and they don't need to hear it. Mr. Joyce, please pick a new subject."

- Hagerstown

"Boonsboro Pharmacy in Boonsboro, Md. is a very nice place to go. Everyone is so friendly and the store is lovely, but there is one person who stands out, and her name is Shirley. I just wanted to say thanks to her for all of her help. She is a very nice person."
