The Brewers

Jesse and Hazel Brewer of Hagerstown celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with their family Sunday, Sept. 10, at Ryan's Restaurant in Hagerstown.

The Brewers were married Sept. 12, 1936, by the Rev. David Petre.

Mrs. Brewer is a housewife.

Mr. Brewer retired from Bearings and Transmissions of Hagerstown.

The Brewers have two children and spouses, Connie and Earmon Shifflett, and Thomas and Carolyn Brewer. They also have five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The Abels

Charles and Joan Abel of Shady Grove, Pa., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005, at a dinner hosted by their children and spouses, Cynthia Shugars, Carolyn and Tim Owens, Charles and Judy Abel, and Jerry and Sherry Abel, who had the dinner at their home. Several family members and close friends joined the celebration.


The Abels were married Nov. 28, 1955, in Lewiston, Idaho.

Mrs. Abel is a homemaker and also worked at Ben Franklin and Sears.

Mr. Abel served two years in the U.S. Army. He worked for the federal government for 29 years and retired from the National Bureau of Standards in 1985.

They have eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The Poffenbergers

Douglas and Cheryl Poffenberger celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at a surprise event at the home of Bill and Mary M. Poffenberger on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006. The celebration was hosted by Mary M. Poffenberger, Doug's mother, and Deborah Toms, his sister.

The Poffenbergers were married Aug. 7, 1981, at the United Church of Christ in Sharpsburg by the Rev. Richard Plant.

Mrs. Poffenberger has been an office support manager with Gary Wright's Allstate Insurance Co., for 18 years.

Mr. Poffenberger is a steamfitter at the Division of Correction Regional Maintenance of MCI.

They have two children, Casey and Cody Poffenberger.

The Tutchtons

James W. and Lauana M. (Myers) Tutchton, now of Castle Rock, Colo., formerly of Hagerstown, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a surprise dinner party, hosted by Mrs. Tutchton's niece and her husband, Gary and Dixie Baker Austin of Funkstown. Family members, friends and former classmates attended the event.

The Tutchtons also celebrated with a transatlantic cruise on the Grand Princess and after sailing the Mediterranean, enjoyed a Roman holiday.

The Tutchtons were married Sept. 1, 1956, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown.

Mrs. Tutchton worked for the Department of Defense, Air Force Contract Management at Martin Marietta, Baltimore Division, and the Denver Division Protocol POC. She also co-founded the Denver Occupational and Aviation Medical Clinic, where she serves as president.

Mr. Tutchton worked for the Department of Defense, Fairchild Aircraft Division in Hagerstow as assistant director, Quality Control Division. He also was employed with Martin Marietta Denver where he was director of Mission Success.

They have two sons, James Jay Tutchton of Denver and Darrell Lee Tutchton. They also have three grandchildren.
