Academy's gallery features music, art, drama and comedy

October 20, 2006

Broadfording Christian Academy held its first gallery show for this school year on Friday, Sept. 29. The theme was "Give the Teacher an Apple."

The galleries are hosted by the music, art and drama departments at BCA. Students of various ages and talents have the opportunity to charm the audience with vocal solos, instrumental solos, drama skits and art exhibits. The galleries are held once a month and feature a different staff member each time. This gallery featured Sal Dobbs, who shared a poetry reading with the audience. Dobbs teaches high school English, Spanish I and II, and an SAT test preparation class at Broadfording.

The highlight of this gallery was a surprise visit from "Maybell Jerkwater," who within a few minutes had the whole audience laughing. Maybell is a country bumpkin who gets the audience involved in her funny act. At one point in the evening, she had several staff members on stage using kitchen utensils as instruments. Entertainer Peggy Dawson has been playing the character of Maybell for more than 15 years. Dawson performs regularly for anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions.

The audience participated in a match-up game. Several staff members submitted grade school pictures for the game. The pictures were scanned and placed into a presentation that ran throughout the evening. Each audience member had to match the picture with the correct name on an answer sheet. Correct answers were revealed at the end of the evening.
